good lightweight graphical web browser?

i know this may start a flame war but i want to know of a good lightweight web browser i can use on really old systems. i want it to be small so i can compile it relatively quickly (unlike mozilla, it takes hours to compile on some systems). it also needs to start up quickly (again, unlike mozilla). i would just use lynx or something but text-based web browsers take all the fun out of web browsing. btw, it doesn't really need to support plugins (i.e. java, shockwave, etc.)

yeah, i did too. when i tried compiling it i got some weird error though. i was just wondering if there was a better browser out there or if i should just deal with the dillo copmile problems i'm having.

i just tried dillo, and it is extremely fast and great for old computers. however, i can't login to LQ or my yahoo email account with it. i guess that's what you've gotta sacrifice for a fast browser. so i guess now my question is what's a good lightweight browser similar to dillo that has a few more features? (like being able to log into LQ!)

I spent a long time on a similar quest, looking for the perfect web browser (fast and full featured) because Mozilla can be sluggish on my 866mhz Transmeta Crusoe.

I had dismissed Konqueror because I disliked QT applications, but it ended up being very nice. I used it for quite a while (with WindowMaker) and was very happy. It is very full featured, including rendering and plugins, and the new QT applications run pretty light and fast. If you haven't yet, give Konqueror a shot.

Currently I am using Firefox. I was very disappointed at first because of its lack of speed, but it has gotten noticable faster (and smaller) with every release. So, if you haven't tried Firefox in a while, give that a try too.

Also, I just noticed on the Dillo FAQ that you can turn on cookies. I believe that will fix the email and forum problems. But honestly, those little web browsers (Dillo and Skipstone) are commendable projects, but personally I just can't use them for everyday browsing.

yeah, i'll give konqueror a try, even though i have a strong dislike for kde. i tried amaya, cheetah, dillo, and others and they're all extremely fast, but have horrible bugs and tend to format web pages very poorly (small text, columns misaligned, etc.). maybe i can also try galeon or epiphany or something too.

here's a report for anyone who's interested in finding a good lightweight browser:

dillo - the best in my opinion. difficult to allow cookies (you've gotta edit a script file).
cheetah - maybe this one's good, but i can't say for sure because it crashed every time i tried to access any web page!
amaya - a little heavy, but it's got some features. doesn't allow cookies.
mMosaic - old skool, i sorta liked it. doesn't allow cookies though.
grail - didn't compile (because of a syntax error??!)
konqueror - i haven't tried this one on a non-KDE system, but i know it's pretty good (fast + features) on KDE.
epiphany - same as konqueror, but replace "KDE" with "Gnome"

conclusion: dillo is the best lightweight graphical browser, but visiting sites with cookies is annoying as hell. konqueror and/or epiphany are probably a good solution too, especially if you use cookies a lot. other than those, you either have to go heavier with firefox, etc., or lighter with a text browser like links, lynx, etc.

"links -g" also works as a lightweight graphical browser.

oh my god, links is amazing. thank you mikshaw, i didn't realize there was a "-g".

btw, i just realized ./configure --enable-cookies for dillo is how you get cookies more easily. out of all the lightweights mentioned above though, links -g is the only one i could logon to LQ with.
