Gnome Icons not working

After I upgraded my packages, my gnome shortcuts and icons will no longer work. They appear as *.desktop and when I click them nothing happens. Does anyone know about this.

I'm having the same problem now

Using gnome 2.8 (slackware-current). Gnome or nautilus or whatever seems to recognize the files as "plain text files" and opens them with a text editor, instead of recognizing them as desktop shortcuts.

I think the problems started when I installed screem. Removed it again, but the problem is still there.

Hmm... a simple "update-mime-database /usr/share/mime" seems to have fixed it.
