mplayer mpeg sound

i have recently installed linux, and mplayer, and am a total newbie with both, so pardon if this is a known issue

i read up on mplayer extensively before install, and i think i have all the codecs in the right places, etc. however, when i play MPEG movies through mplayer, it sounds like everything is underwater. there is a high-pitched distortion on top of everything.

is this a known problem?

if it helps, i have an on-board sound card that came with my ASUS A7V333 mobo.

Give this a shot...I had the same problem with a different program, and it was just the 3D audio that came with linux (in my case debian)---Just turn off the systems 3d audio and try it again

..not sure if thats the problem but its worth a shot.

For me (in debian) you use the toolbar at the bottom of your screen....go to Multimedia on what would be considered the "start" button in windows...then go to "Kmix" or Sound Mixer...You should see 3D just click the green bubble and that will turn it off.

i found KMix, and look at the settings. my 3d sound option was already unchecked. i tried messing with all of the KMix and KControl Sound options but nothing seemed to help.

should i be looking for a device driver specific to my sound card, or is that not hte issue?

Does it sound funny only with the video files?...Try playing some music through XMMS or some other program...that will tell us if its the programs audio or the systems

I have come across this problem myself personally, and it seems to be a problem with the new version of mplayer that was recently released. If it's the same problem you'll find that other programs play your files fine.

I'm not sure what distrobution you're running, but I'm running mandrake 10.0. I was able to fixed the problem run installing the mandrake package for mplayer (which is done by typing in "urpmi mplayer" in the terminal logged in as root) Also, maybe try installing the mplayer 0.92 rather then version 1.0

I don't know if this is a conflict or a bug or even if there's a fix out there, but if you're running mandrake I strongly suggest running the urpmi commnad. Good luck, hope this helps

Oh, one more thing. You said you were new so I'm going to add this on. You're going to want to remove the old mplayer before installing a new one (or old one). To do this you go into the folder where you compiled mplayer from in the first place (the one you downloaded) and type in "make uninstall". You may have to do that as root, I can't really remember.

I am having this same problem with mandrake 10. This worked fine on mandrake 9.2, not sure what changed in my configuration.

It occurs in both mplayer and xine when I play a mpeg file. These are high quality movies, the older/simpler mpeg's sound ok. Not sure how to tell what type of mpeg it is exactly. Anyone have any ideas? I can provide any specs or outputs...
