Is Debian a miracle?

Hello every body. Iam Computer science Graduate. Iam working as a Information security engineer. My working nature is developing cryptographic algorithms, packet analyzers.. I was using RedHat for the past 3 years and I developed lots of networking codes in it. I was a member of some LUG's and during my last Seminarin a LUG, people said go for Debian, for development. Iam very much intrested in development and I was in need of 100% and Stable support for my Development stuffs. After doing a small survey, I switched myself to Debian. At present I have Debian woody3.0r2 with kernel 2.6.5 and Xfree86 4.4.0. Since I installed and started using Debain (For about 2 months) I am getting lots problems in it and also It's getting hanged many times. I read some where else that Debian Woody is a ROCK solid OS. WHy is this happening to me? Iam not blamming Debian. I have posted some 5 queries in this Mailing List and also to some Debian lists. But tilldate, no replys, no adivces...... nothing......... Why? nyway....... Iam not going to leave debian........ I feel some kind of diff between RH and Debian.

my query:

!) I have Xfree86 4.4.0 and kernel 2.6.5. I have Samsung 753s monitor and Intel 845GVSR motherboard. The problem is Iam not getting GUI environment under 1024x768 mode. Why? I have done all the methods, bu still... in XF86Config-4 file and in dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 it was 1024x768 mode only. But still..... Why? But my RH 9 worked in 1024 x 768 in 24-bit mode. Is RH better than Debian?

2) I have AC97 Sound card. My Woody is not detecting it. I have enabled PNP in Kernel 2.6.5. My RH Autodetected my Sound Card.Is RH better than Debian?

Still lots a queries............

some think that rh is really crap, don't start flame wars by asking these "type" of question. If you don't know how to configure it you can use redhat to help you...and use debian when you will know a little bit more about linux.

Could you post the output of /var/log/XFree86.0.log as this will probably indicate the error wrt X not starting and how you can get the resolution. Running Knoppix which uses a debian base will also give a good guide on how to setup XF86Config-4.
wrt your sound card you probably haven't installed the sound module in the kernel. This is achieved by doing modconf as root and going down to sound cards and selecting the relevant driver and installing it.
Bear in mind that you are using the latest kernel and X which can lead to troubles. Debian always ensures that the software in its stable branch is super stable. The down side is that it is also pretty old. You have kind of moved out of that by using non stable software in the Kernel version and X. If you want a stable server environment then use Woody else I would suggest moving to Sarge (testing).
I don't think that its a question of RH being better than Debian its really a question of knowing how Debian works. RH and Mandrake are a bit like M$ you get what you get. It does a good install job but at the same time you maybe getting stuff that you don't need or want. Debian works on a different principle in that you get only a base system and you choose what you want and need after that. In order to get there you just need to understand how to do this.

@velan:

It seems like you are still a bit confused about the differences between 'stable', 'testing' and 'unstable' branches in Debian. Here's a good documentation that explains lots of things you want to know.

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/re...erence.en.html

Read especially chapter 2 'Debian fundamentals'.

Looks like you're having a mouse issue according to those (EE) lines. How many mouse sections do you have in your XF86Config-4 file? I had an issue with that recently. Post it up here.

Wrt your display the problem looks like you are not giving it the correct refresh rates unless you are using a very old monitor. The ranges given won't allow it to give you better than 800x600. I suggest getting the specs of your monitor either from RH config or preferably from the manufacturers website.

Yes we understand that but if you don't supply the correct hsync and vsync values to X it cannot give you display at this resolution. According to the log file you have given hsync as 28 - 49 and vsync 43 - 72. I have 1280x1024 and my hsync=30-70 and vsync=50-160. If you compare them you can see that there is a big difference.

I'm only a Linux newbie (just installed Debian a few days ago) but I've had some problems with XFree86 and have learnt a few things that might help.

For the Samsung 753S the hsync value should be 30-70KHz and the vsync value 50-160Hz.

Further information about this monitor can be found here.

The file you need to edit is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Under the section "Monitor" change the HorizSync value to 30-70 and the VertRefresh value to 50-160

However, if you edit the file manually then debconfig won't be able to write changes to it in future, so if you usually make changes using a menu system run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and select Advanced when configuring the monitor. You should then be given fields to enter the above h and v sync values.

Both methods should achieve the same result.

troll?

Debian woody/stable is only stable when you stick to the woody repositories; you cant go off using UNTESTED and therefore UNSTABLE packages and expect to keep the stablility woody promises! If you are as book smart as you claim to be you should already know this. This post is a troll imo.

zuralin, I see nothing troll-like at all with velan. Velan is just asking for help and getting it from others.

Gotta admit that Mepis (version I'm using being based off Debian Unstable) is pretty good.

I must agree with zuralin, since the dependencies changed radically from XFree86 4.3.0 and up. It must have been a nightmare getting this to work in Woody. Plus, getting the 2.6.x kernel up and running in Woody...!? Praise thee for such an accomplishment. If you manage this you should already know the solution to your problems.

Sticking with the official repositories saves the day I guess (in case you just got lucky getting unofficial packages to work). It now depends whether or not the specific hardware is supported, but the soundcard isn't much of a problem. It is supported in the kernel, see modconf.
