Sound Card

I know this much, I have a PCI sound card. It's the one located in 8650C HP Pavillion models. I wasn't able to get sound to work for my old Redhat 8 distro. I wish to get it working here.


I get warnings on start up:

device /dev/dsp cannot be opened(no such device)

The sound server will continue using null output device.

print the output of this command (which must be run as root):

lspci

This will print a list of all the cards hooked up to your system, including the make and model of your soundcard.

Ehh, If it says, unknown device, you will probably need to download externel drivers for it, because the kernel can't identifiy it. Oh, your sound card is this line:

Check the HCL

Chameleon Audio/Modem ComboCard is what I think I have. I went to the hewlettpackard site for the Pavilion 8650C I own. This is ugly. I probably have to enable my modem first, too. I have it disabled as of the installation.

You might want to check the ALSA website to see if there are drivers for it.

The drivers provided on the recover disc for win98SE for my original system are the following:
in audio folder: Au8810, SBlaster I think Au is Aureal

in aud-mod(which I think is the audio-modem combo drivers): AudioHSF, Hsf and I saw familiar things that use to run in background for win98SE (Msg32.exe) I also noticed "Riptide" in this folder.

In the modem folder: Aztech, Lucent, Conexant(sounds familiar), Lucent ADSL

I located the au8810 on the ALSA site. BUT, would it be much better to get a combo driver? I don't use my modem, though. Will installing just the au8810 driver work even when I disabled my modem which is part of the sound card?

The install instructions for au8810 are tough. What's comipling into kernel and building a seperate module?

Houston we have sound! Good day sunshine. I installed the Linuxant riptide driver following those steps. Now what do I do with the tar.gz and the extracted folder?

I'm using Redhat Linux 9 and it doesn't support my SIS soundcard even I installed sound card from CDROM. What can I do? Is new kernel (2.6.4 example) support this kind of soundcard?

Okay, now I want to setup sound for the same hardware but with the Mandrake Community Download 10.0 this time.

Linuxant has an RPM for MDK 9.2. I have 10.0 CE and will be getting Official once the ISO comes out. Is it safe to download the MDK 9.2 RPM? Also, I'm not sure what Kernel I'm using it's probably not the newer one provided with MDK 10.0CE. Where can I find my Kernel info?
