HOWTO run DVD Shrink with Wine???

you would probably need the same version of wine that the other guy is using.

i just got a demo of the crossover wine, and dvdshrink is running right now.
it took me about 10 minutes to figure out where it had installed the apps. i had no idea how it was going to work. luckily it didn't hose up my other copy of wine. it puts all it's stuff in your home directory in .cxwine.
i got that dvdbackup compiled and installed. that was kind of a pain. that's the longest gcc line i've ever had to type by hand. i'm backing up a dvd to the hard drive with it now for testing, and i should be trying dvdshrink with the files in about 15 or 20 minutes. I've got half a dozen jobs running right now, so it will be a little slow. keep in mind this is redhat 6.2.

at first dvdshrink was crashing left and right, but after disabling the dvd preview box, it was fine. the open files dialog was a little awkward, as i was trying to put stuff from 2 different dvd's into one iso image file. i had to right click and browse, to go down the directory tree. at first i just thought i couldn't do it. at first try, i got the wrong soundtrack for one of the movies. it was labeled english, but it was japanese. the second time, the image file was too big. the program didn't calculate the size or compression just right or something. the third try i cut off about 30 megs and it fit. then i burned it, and it's fine.
i installed gordian knot into crossover office, and it's mostly functional. if i try to crop, it crashes. i'm trying to make a divx right now without the auto-crop. it may actually finish.

anyway, i've never had this much luck with a wine-based program.
i'm using old linux, current crossover wine, and 3.1.7 dvdshink, and i'm playing with gordian knot 0.26 i think.


edit: i let gk run overnight. nandub crashed when trying to mux the video and audio files, but at least those 2 are complete. i tried to use wine to start nandub to do it by hand, and it crashed when i tried to load the video file.
i know how to run ogmmerge, but i don't know anything to mux avi and mp3 in linux. probably some long transcode or mencoder line would do it. i guess i'll hit a man page or 2.

I am using the full version of Crossover Office, it came with my Xandros Distro.

Aktaion, it looks as though you are using the standard wine download, this should work, but I don't know which versions may have problems.

If you haven't already edited the wine configuration file "~/.wine/config" then you can edit it by hand or use winetools. Get it where you normally get your files or http://franksworld.net/winetools.html ( http://frankscorner.org/ also has information on how to get a lot of other apps running under linux)

Try downloading the winetools and setting up your config file and/or downloading the newest version of wine. If either of these don't work, you can use the demo version of Crossover office however it will only work for 30 days, then it will bug you to register.

If this doesn't work, post again and I'll see if I can help (no promises, I'm not a guru)

whansard, if you are trying to make a divx, there is a linux tool which is far superior to any windows tool, dvd::rip.

i was using dvdrip and acidrip before my first ever visit to this site. i actually found out about this site from acid_kewpie, author of acidrip. i've done a bunch of testing with different movies and stuff, and get the cvs versions of some of the divx codecs, but i think the divx 5 pro under gordian knot looks the best. i wish it didn't. it may not be now. i've been messing with other things, mostly since last summer. Xvid's been looking better, but getting slower.


sweet. ogmmerge works with mp3 files too. that was nice of them.

hey whansard - I have installed DVD Shrink under cxoffice - but it does not seem to see my DVD writer when I try to open the disc. I get an error message

Failed to initialize ASPI device
File not found

my DVD Writer is setup as /dev/dvd. I have not messed around with the config file in cxoffice.

PS - I have both DVD:Rip and Acidrip installed but I think DVD Shrink is much simpler to use and does a lot more (I know I will get hammered on this by our linux folks !)

i imaged the files to the hard drive first instead of using dvdshrink to read the dvd. i used dvdbackup for that. you can probably use mencoder or dvdrip too, i just haven't tested.
that dvdbackup is part of a project to make a dvd reauthoring program for linux.
i might try to figure out how to get the aspi thing working later. i'm back to playing
with divx stuff again. that aspi is a sort of driver layer that windows uses to access a dvd or cdrom drive. i remember downloading something like that from adaptec long ago for windows. windows dvd players install it i think. maybe install powerdvd or something like that in crossover office?

I installed the latest version of Wine (20040309). Then it was not possible to take hold inside HD with "Open File". There was no option. So, I installed Wine 20030813 again.

Furthermore I installed Wine-Tools 2.1.0 without any success.

It was also without success to install ASPI-drivers and DivX (codecs and player) for DVD viewing.

Next I tried CrossoverOffice-Wine-Demo-2.1.0. It will work with that stuff, but only for 30 days.

transgaming puts together a decent wine package that's free if you build it yourself by cvs.

yes, I tried also Winex from Transgaming.

That software needed a lot of compiling time. And it will not work. "Allocation error" or the like.
It's annoying and I will give up with this software.

Looking for a serial would be stealing, from a linux soft pub none the less? Get lost man. Your hurting the cause, and its not appriciated around here. Free as in freedom, not beer.

you have to understand, that you only can use this software with a special licence number (= serial). Don't bother me here - read the official site FAQ of the mentioned company.
