Playing an Audio CD on RedHat 9.0

Whenever I try to put in an audio CD to play, the CD player comes up and gives every indication that it is playing (time elapses, CD ROM LED lights up as if it's reading it, etc) but I get no sound out of my speakers. I know Linux has detected my sound card because I can play the test sound fine and I can have sounds for events. I'm also sure the CD drive is fine too because I can mount a data CD and read from it. Does anyone know what my problem is? Thanks.

Are you sure the cd is connected to your sound card?

You need a special cable. It's used inside the computer and usually comes with a CDROM drive. One end should be connected to the CDROM (near power etc), second end to the sound card (check in its docuemntation where).

Shouldn't this be done already? I can play an audio CD in Windows.

Windows uses the digital cd output from your drive to play audio CDs, bypassing the sound card.

Linux requires this cable. There's a small dependency that I think you can download for xmms which uses the Digital output from your drive but I've never been able to get it to work.

Long shot - but the volume control on the actual CD drive? Have you checked all the volume settings on the CDplayer application? Guess you have checked the volumes in alsamixer? Just turn them all up full, then if it works, you can turn off any volumes that do not affect your sound?

No, that's definately not the problem. Is there anyway I can bypass such a cable? Like, can the cd-rom trasfer the sound the way XP does it? Thanks.
