I just installed Slackware 7.1 on a Pentium 166. I cannot not get Xserver to start up. I get "fatal server error: open_framebuffer: failed to open /dev/fb0 (no such device)".
Any Suggestions?
Distribution: Redhat v8.0 (soon to be Fedora? or maybe I will just go back to Slackware)

have you tried...
have you tried running:
/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config
Thats all I ever used in my Slackware days. You should set it for very conservative settings at first.. like 800x600 with 8 bit color. Use very local monitor refresh. Once you get that working, back up the XF86Config file (I don't think Slack v7.1 has an XF86Config-4)
Then go back and try some more agressive settings ... increasing little by little.
Ok, I've got X running now (I reinstalled). Problem now is that my mouse does not work at all. I have changed the mouse settings around, and cannot get it to work no matter what. Please help.

Mouse
The mouse is configured with X. What kind of mouse do you have? Check your XF86Config, for the following:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
That will show how your mouse is setup. You can edit that manually (if you know how) or you can re-run 'xf86config' or whatever you are using to configure Xwindows.
I have a Logitech 2-Button p/s2 mouse. I have tried using the logitech 2 button, logitech 3 button, microsoft 2 button, and P/S2 options. None of them seem to work.
And now I seem to have messed up something else, because X will not run anymore
Well, I finally got the issue resolved. I tried going through and doing it through xf86config(several times). It seems that the only thing I accomplished is either messing up X or not getting the mouse set right. So, I decided to reinstall one more time and, viola, it worked. I have it all up and running now. I thank you, KevinJ, for the pointers that you gave.
