how do I find out device names for mounting

I have a sony picturebook with a memory stick, I also have a USB memory stick reader.

I can mount the mem stick reader as /dev/sda1 however I couldn't figure out what device it was - I tried /dev/sda1 by chance and it worked.

The Red Hat (ver 9.0) hardware browser doesn't list the USB reader at all - it does list the mem stick under floppy drives as a 'Sony MSC-U01' as follows:
- manufacturer: unknown
- driver: none or built in
- device: /dev/sdb

The only data listed under USB devices is as folows:
82371AB/EB/MB PIX4 USB
manufacturer: unknown
driver: usb-uhci

Is there a reliable command that I can run to figure out which devices to use when I want to mount a USB , Firewire, etc device?

When ever I'm plugging in a memory stick of any type, I first run at the command prompt

tail -f /var/log/messages

That gives you a dynamic reading of the last 10 lines in the log file. Then plug the memory stick in and you will see it probe the new device and give you an output similar to this........

As you can see there at the bottom it is telling me sda is the device : )
