Unhappy Radeon 7200 and XFree4.3? Getting the ATI drivers running...?

Hi All:

I have a Radeon 7200 (Value Edition) and I thought that I should re-ask my questions in a separate thread, rather than filling up the various Radeon 9x00 threads with extra noise.

Anyway...

I have been trying the suggestions listed in several of the Radeon threads for installing the ATI version of the drivers, with no success. Even moving the tar file to "/", as suggested in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...e&pagenumber=1 didn't help (it shouldn't have mattered as it looks like it untars with absolute paths, no?).

Doing ./make.sh in the /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/ directory seems to go fine with the following messages:

bash-2.05b# ./make.sh
ATI module generator V 2.0
==========================
initializing...
probing for VMA API version...
cleaning...
patching 'highmem.h'...
skipping patch for 'drmP.h', not needed
patching 'drm_os_linux.h'...
doing script based build for kernel 2.4.x and similar
compiling 'agpgart_be.c'...
compiling 'agp3.c'...
compiling 'i7505-agp.c'...
compiling 'nvidia-agp.c'...
compiling 'firegl_public.c'...
linking of fglrx kernel module...
duplicating results into driver repository...
done.
==============================
You must change your working directory to /lib/modules/fglrx
and then call ./make_install.sh in order to install the built module.
==============================

However, I'm still getting the following error from running ./make_install.sh in /lib/modules/fglrx/:

bash-2.05b# ./make_install.sh
- creating symlink
- recreating module dependency list
- trying a sample load of the kernel module
Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.23/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY

You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.23/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.23/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.23/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.o: insmod fglrx failed
failed.
bash-2.05b#

Also, tailing syslog shows:

Dec 10 16:48:47 lucifer kernel: [fglrx:firegl_init] *ERROR* Device not found!

I have done this with the Radeon driver running and also with it unloaded and the VESA framebuffer being used instead. There was no success either way.

Further, information at http://www.ati.com/developer/altoschart.pdf seems to indicated that the Radeon 7200 is only supported for 2D and 3D by the OpenGL DRI drivers. 2D and 3D support with the ATI drivers is only for the Radeon 8500 and higher cards.

So, I have been banging my head into the wrong wall, haven't I? I suppose I should move onto installing the DRI module instead, right?

Thanks for any suggestions...

Perhaps you'll find this thread, from the Dropline forums, helpful.
