intel i810 vs VESA

ok. i got suse 9, and it works, except for ACPI and my video card.

my question is: is there a "generic" graphics card driver i can use to get a 1024x768 resolution?

i tried VESA, and i still only get 800x600 on suse 9.

i tried my specifics driver, i810, and that only gives my 800x600. intel has a "driver" to download form their website. i installed it, and followed its instructions as ordered, and not XF86 wont even start up. so i removed it, and im back with i810 at 800x600 with 3d hardware support.

i want something that will give me 1024x768...with out without 3d support, i dont care. as long as its 1024x768.

if i am too lazzy, i'd say try another distro...

i tried: redhat 8, redhat 9, Morphix (knoppix clone), suse 8.2, and none worked. they all report that its running at 1024x768, but really its 800x600.

i always though resolution depended on the monitor, not gfx card. i guess i was wrong. i know my LCD (laptop) 1024x768 monitor can go that high, because its a brand new laptop and XP gets those resolutions.

resolution is dependant on the lowest common denominator of both the display adaptor (the card) and the monitor.

your hardware might not be returning any useful information during setup.

if you want to play around with getting the higher resolutions.

note that this might bust your monitor if you accidentally drive it too high.
I've only recently seen monitors that will protect against this, which is pretty lame imo.

I got a laptop and installed gentoo and knoppix on it and both work fine with the i810 chip - even got 3d going w/o any trouble.My best guess is to look at the monitor.Try if get the resolution with a lower frequency or color depth.Try to remove all modes except 1024x768 to force it to that resolution.

WARNING:You probably won't be able to get x up and running after that until you fixed the problem.Don't do this if you don't know how to edit the x configuration file in a terminal and get it to work.

ill try it. ill try lowering the LCD frequence. so what this webpage is saying is that it should work if i disable 3d acceleration?

ill try different combos, VESA and i810 with different screens.

As said - I didn't have any issues with it and 3d with knoppix and gentoo - had redhat 9.0 on there,too but didn't try 3d with it.The only strange thing is that I get double to three times the frame rates with knoppix vs. the ones I got with gentoo.

i dont see the i810 driver in the sax2 drivers list. im using a different chipset maybe? 82852? i tried it on redhat 9, i dont think i saw it there either. strange.

i DEFFINITELY dont see it (i810 driver). im sure its a different chipset now. i have morphix from a linux magazine, which is like knoppix, and it sees it as 1024x768, but only displays at 800x600.

i tried downgrading to redhat 7.3, and it wouldnt even boot. froze up at the USB device thing. too old i guess. i downgraded because the driver intel gave me said it works for up to redhat 7.3.

ok, ill do that. but for now, ill post back more findings. i was able to temporarily hook up a flat screen CRT monitor that's 17". i was able to get 1024x768 and higher with that monitor. so the gfx card is out of the question i guess, its the monitor. i know its capable of 1024x768 because #1) its a new laptop and #2) windows gets the 1024 resolution. to get the high resolutions on the CRT monitor, i was using VESA 1024x768@60Hz driver. im currently using the same settings for the laptop LCD, but dont get any higher than 800x600. ill post lcpsi later.

And that's pretty much the same thing you got.I do use the i810 driver and why it won't show up in your configuration screen is beyound me.Don't know if there are any 'issues' and Suse might have not included it with the distro.
Anyway - forget about SAX for a moment and try to configure it 'by hand'
Do xf86config or /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config as root and configure the server.In my xfree version the driver shows up as number 291 but it might be different with yours - depends on the xfree version.
If you do that back up your original file first of all.If you don't feel up to it drop me an email and I'll send you my xfree configuration file.

Toshiba A15-something.Still trying to figure out if I'll keep it or not.Another thing you can try is to download knoppix and just copy the config files over if you got a fast connection.It's not pretty but it works.Good luck.
