Try running Xconfigurator as root and reconfig X. You will need to know video card, video memory and monitor specifications.

# Configuring X
Linux Hardware Compatibility HOWTO - video cards
The Linux XFree86 HOWTO
Configuring XFree86 for a Non-Specific Linux Distribution
Common X configuring tools:
Debian - dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
Mandrake - XFdrake
Red Hat Linux 9: Red Hat Linux Reference Guide Chapter 7. The X Window System
Redhat 7.3 down - the setup utility leads to several config tools
Redhat 7.3 up - redhat-config-xfree86
You may have these tools:
XF86Setup
XFree86 -configure
Xconfigurator
xf86cfg
xf86config
xconf
ATI Linux drivers
If you need the nVidia driver, you want the Linux IA32 driver unless you just bought the new AMD 64 bit CPU

I also agree that Xfree is failing to load.

The most typical cause is the video card is not properly detected. This means you will have to configure it manually yourself. You might start with a google search with "xfree86" and our video card's chipset listed. Worse case, you might have to use the low performance "Vesa Frame Buffer" driver, assuming your video card was made in this century and is Vesa 2.0 compliant. Sometimes if your video card doesn't have much internal memory and you DON'T have AGP-gart being loaded, then X can't get enough memory available to go into any "desired" video modes.

The next typical cause is that the mouse (pointer device) isn't being detected. You can deal with this in a similar method as above.

If you can us more detail on the error message, (just type "X -probeonly" so that just the server starts up and not all the wm stuff associated with your GUI is loaded. Look for error messages that would be more meaningful to us.) We can help you more. Also you might tell us what kind of video card and mouse (serial, USB, PS2 types etc) you have.

xfree

Thanks for Wartstew,Fancypiperand Theother1
Pleaed to inform you that Xfree is booting to KDE desktop
I used Interactive Mandrake from CD. Can only guess that inspite of the fact that I have tried to upgrade the system it failed to startx the CD was not reading and installing all the code.An interesting learning experince ,one could say.
Look forward to Mandrake 9.2
Thanks
Maurice
