Just got linux to work on the internet (finially got a new modem )
My question is: does MSN work on Linux, I have tried a plugin for mozilla firebird, and that does not seem to do much, gaim does not seem to have a option, and I cant figure out (I am a newbie!) how to install kopete
Distribution: Mandrake as base, most software hand rolled

Gaim should work. You need a version later than 0.70 and has SSL, though. http://gaim.sourceforge.net has more versions than you can shake a stick at.

You don't have a C compiler installed on your system. You could install one and compile Gaim from source, but then you'd have to hunt down all the dependencies and compile them as well (and if you use GnuTLS as the SSL library, that turns ugly very quickly - I had to modify one library's source just to get it to compile).
Do yourself a favour and get the rpm version here. That saves you a lot of hassle.
the RPM version installs, but I dont know how to run it, no icons have been created, and I cant see no obvious directorys - or does it require a restart?
I also tried amsn, but the "wish" command is not found, and it says I need to install tcl/tk packages (tcl & tk) - what ever that means :|

Open a terminal and type gaim. That should work.
Another way is to call up the 'Run' Dialog (usually in the desktop environment 'Start' menu (or whatever it's called in RedHat) ), and type gaim in that.
You can look into the documentation for your desktop environment for information on how to create an icon and/or menu item for gaim.
