gnome running 'under' kde? :-|

I've got gnome's dropline edition under my 12.0 slackbox, but rarely use it. My usual dm is kde.
the point is, when I run some apps that came with gnome (eg: totem), konsole fonts, mouse's cursors and windows decoration's colors change to the gnome's style setted in the gnome desktop.
this is quite annoying coz 'things change it shape', but have no idea of how to deal with it.
before starting any gnome app, ps reveals this
Code:
ps x |grep gnome
 4211 ? S 0:00 /usr/libexec/gnome-vfs-daemon
but after starting totem -even after closing it, the output is:
Code:
ps x |grep gnome
 4211 ? S 0:00 /usr/libexec/gnome-vfs-daemon
13234 ? S 0:00 /usr/libexec/gnome-vfs-daemon
13257 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon
13361 ? Ss 0:00 gnome-screensaver
I remember being 'turned off' gdm some time ago (seems I used to see also gdm running ps) letting xdm be the one working, as an attempt to fix this behavior, but it continue happening.
I'll appreciate any hint to stop this 'gnome styles' appearing under kde.
is it possible?

thanks in advance

I guess gnome-vfs-daemon can do its things under any desktop environment, also kde. Totem is a gnome application so it depends on decorators etc from Gnome, so those will replace your kde ones when running, don't think you can avoid that. It would be better to avoid pure Gnome apps like that (if those applications are essential for you, its probably better to use Gnome rather than KDE). How about Kaffeine instead of Totem? Totem have always played catch-up to Kaffeine in my view (although I have been on Gnome for the last few years).

I don't think the kdm, gdm, xdm choice matters too much. Probably better to match it to what you use, but its not essential afaik. On my system I set the dm in /etc/conf.d/xdm.

thanks, mons
understand that gnome apps needs gnome resources but.. what about konsole, even also firefox? (both are affected in its fonts and cursors and colors respectively).

there must be something underlying all of this. don't know if it's fixable, but at least it would be nice to understand why other apps are affected as well.

Are you sure that you're using xdm instead of gdm? Have you tried using kdm instead of either of those two?

hi PTrenholme,
well.. no desktop manager seems to be 'active' before nor after loging in, coz I start on runlevel 3 (textmode), then I choose by xinitrc wich dm to start.

despite not finding why, I already discover HOW -to avoid the annoying behavior: just chmoding -x gnome-settings-daemon executable.
this seems to fix the issue, hope this not to provoke problems when running gnome -at any case, I don't use it. (totem works just fine)

thanks to all penguins pals!
:-)
