Which Window Manager

Although GNOME is conspicuously absent, as some of you might have noticed, Slackware comes with a mighty host of Windows and Desktop Managers. There are so many I do not remember them all. I think that this is a strong point for Slackware that its derivatives tend to lack. Personally I like XFCE because it is a good compromise but I like to switch both to KDE and Fluxbox according to my mood, need or convenience. It would be nice to know which are the most popular ones with the Slackware users in order to get a better profile of the average user and see where we all fit in.

So please, for those that run Slackware, do let us know which is your favorite WM and why.

Window Maker -- simple, fast, and reliable.

IceWM on older hardware, KDE on new hardware.
IceWM is light & fast, yet with some very handy features.

Ever since my old AMD system became too old to run KDE, I have been using Fluxbox and have not looked back ever. I have played with XFCE and even compiled and ran IceWM, but always go back to Fluxbox. Even now on my notebook I have switched to Fluxbox.

I think even when I am going to build a new computer I will still be using Fluxbox. KDE 3.x is nice, but I don't feel the need for it anymore. I have tried some live distros with KDE 4, and decided not even to bother whenever KDE 4 finally is included into Slackware.

I also played around with Dropline GNOME, one of the few versions of GNOME sanctioned by Pat (Also Freerock). I found Freerock to be ok, but still managed to change too much of the base system of Slackware, and the latest Dropline version I tried seemed to startup rather slowly.

KDE on the new and Fluxbox on the old - seems a good fit for me.

WindowMaker and occasionally IceWM.

XFce, it has a good blend of speed and functionality for me:-)

There's been a poll like this before, but it's always good to re-poll.

Anyway, I predict fluxbox will shoot up quickly only to be overtaken in the longrun by KDE ... just like in the last poll, note at the time of this writing fluxbox is at 30.43%, KDE is at 21.74%.

Apologies for being a bit pedantic, but I think kde, xfce and gnome are desktops whereas the likes of fluxbox and others are window managers.

For the record, I run slack/kde most of the time as a desktop, and a server with slack/fluxbox and I'm currently writing this on xubuntu sitting in front of the TV.

I am the other person on the planet using UWM.

I still wish CDE would have made it to being opensource. I have been curious about motif based enviornments. They also seem very lightweight like Fluxbox.

Another vote for Window Maker.

Xfce for me...........I have a pretty fast box but I do prefer the speed and simplicity of Xfce. It does have it's quirks, example, menu editing, but there is a work around for it.

KDE, with fluxbox a close second.
