Question Sound problem after kernel update

This is not the first time I have this problem:

I updated my Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) and now there's no sound.
Double click on the sound icon in the panel says

Quote:
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
Now, after reading a bit, I suppose what's happening is that my sound module is not configured in the kernel (or something like that, please confirm).

Quote:
$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.24-21-386 (buildd@palmer) (gcc version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #1 Mon Aug 25 16:58:26 UTC 2008
Quote:
$ lspci -v | grep audio
03:01.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
Quote:
$ sudo lsmod | grep snd
(nothing)
Quote:
$ sudo depmod -a
$ sudo modprobe snd
FATAL: Module snd not found.
FATAL: Error running install command for snd
that's the kind of things that I tried but I don't know how to install the proper sound module in the kernel...

help to solve this problem and explanation of what is going on (so I can fix it when it happens again) will be greatly appreciated,

Carlos

I found a solution for the sound problem

Finally, I found the guide that I myself used the last time this happened:

Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

It is a great guide, very generic and useful. I followed it step-by-step and now the sound is working.

There's a link that seems to be broken. To check to see if the ALSA driver for your sound card exists, go to http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main

The branch that helped me was the "ALSA driver Compilation".

I was about to answer to this unread thread telling you that I blame the kernel-modules package to not have been installed correctly or an error showed up in the package installation. And that you could have checked for this by running find on /lib/modules for "snd".

But anyway, congrats on solving your problem.
