I don't know a lot about video processing and stuff, but I'm under the impression that the black bars are necessary in order to view a widescreen movie on a fullscreen display without messing-up the image (giving people coneheads, etc). I believe if you want to get rid of the black bars at the top and bottom you'd need to trim the image on the sides, which might give you an even higher level of suckage.

Video Lan

If you use vlc player you can press the "c" key (or use the menus) to crop your video to the correct aspect ratio. You will lose some of the video, but this would happen even with any video converter.

You can use apt-get install vlc to get it, or you can goto VideoLan.org for more information.

This works for all video formats as well as DVD's.

Hope that helps.

ffmpeg will do what you want - you can crop, change aspect, etc
