I know it's a stupid question and there is a simple answer. All I know is to go to the terminal and there is a command to type? could someone help me? I logged on as SU and cd to the folder in which the tar file is contained. from there i am lost?

Issue command:
Code:
tar xf packagename.tar
This will produce a folder/directory by the package's name, there will be a README file or INSTALL file with further instructions.
If it is a .tar.gz package, issue command:
Code:
tar xzf packagename.tar.gz
If it's a .tar.bz2 package, issue command:
Code:
tar jxf packagename.tar.bz2
To view the README.txt, issue command:
Code:
less README.txt
Then use the up/down arrow keys to scroll up and down the document.
EDIT: Replace "packagename" with actual name of the package.

You do not use YAST to install *tar.gz packages. The link I posted has general info about various methods of installing software and for *.tar.gz and *.tar.bz2 packages, you need to look at the section called "compiling from source". Note that some *.tar.gz and *.tar.bz2 packages contain binary packages that are already compiled and ready to run.

I think the script you need to set off is vmware-install.pl with command:
Code:
./vmware-install.pl
There is an installation manual called "The complete guide to Vmware Workstation.pdf", google it and download it.
