fdisk boot?


dumb question.

so i'm dedicating my whole harddrive to slack.
/dev/hda1 ext2
/dev/hda2 Linux swap

i set the hda1 with a boot flag correct?

You don't need bootable flag if you plan to use grub/lilo. However, there is nothing wrong if you set it.

thanks

another question. well more like a problem.

this is like the 3rd time i've tried to install slack 11.
im using the DVD iso

i partition, everything goes fine. full install.
the screen comes up that says ok install finished, press ctrl-alt-delete to reboot
i do that.
then after bios screen loads all i get is a black screen with blinking cursor.

help?

login as root
'adduser' to make a new user
'exit'
login as the new user
run 'startx'

huh?

i have no place to do this.
adduser won't work on the boot of the cd.

and after i reboot when it tells me to. no lilo no nothing

help please...

Ok, so lilo does not pop up, where did you install it ? Should typically be to the MBR.

yes it's installed in the MBR
and i just reinstalled and did it again in the MBR

still after reboot after bios no lilo. only blinking cursor.

Can you tell more about your system. How many hard drives does it have, how many operating systems, the partition layout, etc.

1 hd. It's a laptop.
only 1 os. slack to be.
parition layout is
linux /root hda 1 9 gig
linux /usr/local hda 2 50 gig
linux swap hda 3 1 gig

So does lilo never come up ? Or does the kernel fail to boot ?

If no lilo comes up, then lilo was not installed properly. Maybe the DVD was not burned properly (although most of the install worked ok). Check the md5sum of the DVD, make sure it is ok. If you say you installed lilo, then it should have been installed. What kernel did you install, BTW ?

i got it.
apparently i didn't set up the correct parameters for lilo for my cd drive.

oh well.

thanks for all the help!

oh and just a question, which window manager do you use? is it basically just all preference?

You should try different ones. I use fluxbox, it is light, fast, stable.
