CD writer problem

hi,
whenever i insert cd into my cdrw it is telling me "/dev/hdc is write protected and opening in readonly"
i could not write cd using k3b.
please tell me the solution to write cd in Fedora Core 3 linux

Try burning as root.
Open terminal on desktop, type 'su', give root password, type k3b and burn.

What are the permissions on /dev/hdc ?
Can you burn CDs as root?

If you can burn CDs as root and not as a user, try adding the write bit to /dev/hdc.

chmod 555 /dev/hdc

If possible, I would also consider upgrading to a more recent release of Fedora. FC3 is no longer supported, so I would suggest FC5 or 6. This is not the solution to your problem, but it will probably fix it anyway.

You may also want to run k3b setup to adjust privilege settings so that you can burn cd's also as a standard user.

On systems I use (debian), the cd drive is owned by root, but the group owner is cdrom and so simply adding users to the cdrom group allows them to interact with the drive. I think it would be a good idea to see if that is the case here.

With the command:

ls -lisa /dev/hdc

You will be able to see the privileges and owner of the drive.

this is my first post on this forum.

open the terminal and type su then press enter
it will prompt for root password,enter that and you will login as superuser with root privelages.

so you will be able to access the cd writer.

I'm confused ,if it says it's read-only it's already written to
if it's blank you don't mount it ,until after the burn of course

this is totally beyond me!
