Can't booting after re-installing glibc

Hi,

I have RHEL4 installed and tried to re-install glibc in rescue mode but it fails. Now, I cannot reboot the server. I must go into rescue mode because some glibc related file was corrupted and I can't get into the shell.

This is the steps that I did:

1. booting into rescue mode
2. run rpm to re-install glibc package. This fails with Segmentation Fault error.
3. reboot the server. It hangs by showing error message related to volume group.

This is the message shown after rebooting the server:

....
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel
Red Hat nash version 4.1.18 starting
File descriptor 3 left open
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Found volume group "VolGroup00" using metadata type lvm2
File descriptor 3 left open
2 logical volume(s) in volume group "VolGroup00" now active
File descriptor 3 left open

Then, it stops right there...

Can anyone give advice on how to let the server able to reboot?

Thanks,
Adi

Maybe the filesystem is corrupt - boot to rescue mode and try e2fsck.

1)boot from your instalation CD, enter "linux rescue" at the begining of boot process
2)mount your installation somwhere (usually RH mounts it automatically in /mnt/sysimage)
3)reinstall your glibc again: rpm --root=/mnt/sysimage -i /mnt/source/glibc-xxxxx.rpm
4)chroot to your installation, but use some static shell: chroot /mnt/sysimage /bin/ash.static
5)run "ldconfig"
6)exit chroot, unmount disks, reboot
7)if nothing helped :-( - reinstall linux
