Hard crash on MSI Km4m motherboard.

Has any one here had any problems running FreeBSD on an MSI KM4M motherboard?

On one of my boxes I have 6.1 running and every 6hours to sometimes 1 week it will crash very hard with nothing to read in the logs.

Just curious.

Is anything output to the console when it crashes?

I haven't used FreeBSD to any extent on MSI products, but plugging msi, freebsd and crash into google doesn't throw anything up in particular.

No nothing. Now here is something interesting with the MSI Km4m it will crash with Centos, Gentoo, Mandriva/Mandrake, etc... But if you compile the kernels with all optimizations then the crashing goes away.

So I tried that with FreeBSD and guess what, no more crashing. Could it be something in ACPI, or something with the 3dNow instructions get handled??

My hardware knowledge isn't good, but I would guess your graphics hardware is involved because nothing is output to the screen. Every crash I have experienced with FreeBSD something is ouput to the console.

I suppose if you really bored you could recompile a default kernel, make sure it starts crashing and then change one thing in your kernel configuration and recompile. Repeat until the crashes stop then you'll know exactly what option stops the crashing.

Another thing you can do is follow this two part article, part 2 is here to get a core dump and examine it. As the article suggests you can submit it to the FreeBSD mailing lists and see if it catches the interest of a developer.

Perhaps it wasn't actually a crash, but the screen just turned off and there was no way to wake it? That could be an ACPI problem.
