Suddenly unable to log in

Hi,

I use Slackware 10.2.

All out of sudden I can't log in. The system boots normal (no errors), I type username/passwd and after the log in message it throws me back to log in prompt.

This happens with both normal user account and root.

I used a rescue cd to boot and I tried runlevel 4 but same problem. Kde starts I type username/passwd and after 2-3 secs I get the login screen again.

I tried runlevel 1 (and 3) but same problem.

I took a look at log files but can't figure something out (I'm not very experienced). I checked the disk space and it looks like I have a lot on all partitions.

Any help - advise would be really appreciated

What *DO* the logins show? Does it tell you invalid password, or just drop you back to login after what looks like a successful login? If the latter, you might have a startup script that aborts the login process somehow, or the shell is improperly configured.

The latter is the case. I give the username/passwd (for any user), the system accepts them but after the login message drops me back to login.

Concerning your suggestions which files do you think I should look?

The ones in /etc you most recently modified. Or if you did a partial
update/upgrade .. get rid of those. If you're lucky its something silly
you did to /etc/profile or a file in /etc/profile.d ...

Thanks for the help! I was lucky and the problem is solved.

I disabled 2 scripts in profile.d folder that were created by qt3.3.6 that I had uninstalled...at least I think this gave the solution cause apart from searching within the different files I didn't touch anything else.

Lesson learnt? Things on Slack don't "just happen"; you do them ;}
(or you're using something like slapt-get that Pat never intended).
