DISCUSSION: CDMA modem/phone Howto

This thread is to discuss the article titled:
CDMA modem/phone Howto

Quote:
This, and many other forums, are full of enquiries as to how to get a CDMA modem to work. So this is a mini Howto which I hope will help many of you. This describes my experience of setting up a "ZTE" Fixed Wireless Phone for use on PTCL Wireless in Pakistan. It should be of use for any modem or modem/phone which uses the "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSN" modem. For those who have just bought one of these phones and are itching to get started immediately, this phone works very well on the S.u.S.E. 9 Livecd. Just use YaST2 to set up the modem, then Kinternet to connect. Now if S.u.S.E. can do it, why can't we set it up on ANY Linux system? That is just what we will try to do here.

No, that is NOT a CDMA modem.
You should see:

cdc_acm in at least three lines, the last of which should include:
"USB Abstract Control Model driver for USB modems and ISDN adapters"

Please post your questions in one thread in only one forum. Posting a single thread in the most relevant forum will make it easier for members to help you and will keep the discussion in one place. Replies to your question should be redirected to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=492309. Since the article is based on a vPTCL connection, I know it DOES work! Read the article again and concentrate on stage one!

I hope this question isn't too dumb.I don't understand what service your dialing in to that doesn't require a username and password. Is it like a cellular service isp or something?Would it work if I wanted to dial in to my home computer or local isp? I mean will it do everything a regular modem does? That would be great.

well dear for u ......... u better post a new thread (as i m going to do now) describing
1- each and everything u came across regarding ur problem
2- all the specifications of ur hardware (google ur device for deatils)
3- any attempts u have made by now
and then take atleast 20-25 (xanax or valium or any thing like that) caz nothing will be going to solve ur problem.

Let me clear up a few points.
PTCL is Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation Limited, which was until recently the State-owned telephone company of Pakistan. Vwireless is a name given to the wireless phone section of PTCL, which is still state-owned, the landline section having been sold off (Privatized).
We are talking about Fixed Wireless Phones, which look like a regular phone set but have a small rubber-ducky type antenna on the side.
The same company also provides "handsets" which are like mobile phones (cellphones to U.S. users). These handsets, at least the ones that I have seen provided by vPTCL, cannot provide Internet access!
No username or password is required because each set has a builtin SIM and the phone number provides the necessary identification.

The sets sold in Pakistan are NOT serial to USB devices! They use the cdc-acm module.

Users outside of Pakistan will normally find CDMA service providers in their countries. I am envious of the Eastern Europe countries where apparently they have much better data rates than we have. I've heard tales of 200 kbps and better!

Obviously, I am not an expert on every model of phone, so please post questions in seperate threads.

very right petersum, u r not expert. i tell u that phonesets (terminal devices) provided by PTCL are different. Devices which r like normal telephone sets r called Terminals, while handsets (cell phones) r rare and costly. also terminals (phojne like deivces) r equipped with serial to usb. that depends upon the reqwuirement of user, in my case sales person ask me if my computer have a serial port? as my notebook was not equipped with serial port (as most notebooks do not) they include serial to usb adapter and that was free of cost. i m talking about HUAWEI ETS2051. i repeat again that FWTs come with serial to USB cable.
i hope it is clear now.

OK, Imran Malik. When you get your phone working, write a thread telling others how to do it.

Eid Mubarrak!
