Which do you like better and why? KDE or GNOME

I have had this debate with a few of my fellow students. Which is the prefered desktop enviroment. Some say KDE( like me) Some say Gnome( mostly the instructors, wonder why that is) I want to know what this particular *nux community tinks!

I prefer kde but I dont use either.

I voted for KDE only cos it has more apps. Or else I don't care much which DE or WM I am using. No I am still not a geek enough to manage with CLI and I do need my daily dose of graphics and multimedia.

I voted for KDE. I installed Ubuntu on one PC & Kubuntu on another. I kept using Kubuntu and I have now given up on Gnome. KDE seems more like the GUI that I "grew up with", namely RISC-OS3. The really sad thing though is that I still mainly use Windows (sorry about the swearing) as with 5 PCs all running BOINC software, it was just too much hassle under Linux, be it Kubuntu, Ubuntu, DSL or Mandriva. Also I am seem to get 10% more BOINC cobblestones under Win2k than under Kubuntu. I'll try the Linux route again later in the year.

Neither, they are both bloated TAT and far too slow for acceptable use (opening a konsole on my 2GHz Athlon takes almost 1 second -- pfff, what's it doing, recompiling it?).

I started out using KDE at my old school, and when I installed my first distro Gnome was the default, and my first impression was that the look and feel was less rigid and had softer edges, which I liked. Nowdays I do not have anything against KDE (except I hear it includes some proprietary software), but I have just stuck with Gnome because I am more familiar with it.

KDE does not contain any proprietary software and its components are licensed under various opensource licences.

I've got both installed but use Gnome. If I want to run a KDE app, then I do it in Gnome. For me, it's a difference between 282mb ram when idle (KDE) and 98mb ram in Gnome. Tough choice.

I like KDE because it's easy to install and use. I'm on Slackware so getting GNOME, whether from source or from a third-party project, is a pain. Plus I like the look of Qt apps better.

Is that supposed to be a joke? You really consider it to be acceptable to lose ~100mb just to run your window manager? !!! Man, M$ has a lot to answer for...

This is like asking "which is better--Ford or Chevy?" No one can ever win this argument... I like Gnome better than KDE because:

* KDE has way too many apps. There are multiple ways to configure the same desktop options. Too cluttered--it drives me crazy.

* KDE tries too hard to be like Windows, and I hate that.

* On my Gnome desktop I use drawers, and to my knowlege there is no such thing in KDE.

* Gnome is perkier than KDE on my AMD Sempron 2800+ with 1GB ram.

* Gnome is everything I need without a lot of junk.

I prefer KDE because for me it just works better; the last time I tired both managers I ran into more problems with Gnome on my system. However, I think that the appearance of the Gnome interface is more professional and polished, while KDE looks more like a toy. On my older system I just use a console, or if I must have X I use Fluxbox. It's amazing how fast that runs on an old PII....
