If you're trying to upgrade Sagre with that kernel, it's not particularly suprising that it might fail.Sarge is solid as a rock, but not very receptive to packages coming in from other repositories. I think that maybe kernel 2.6.12 is in the Stable repos.
I had the same problem. When running sid I usually wait a week and the issue usually resolves itself when the bug is dealt with, and a newer version put in the repositories.
2.6.15 is in the repo's and should install with no problems, unless you need 2.6.16 for a specific issue. Or as h2gofast say's just wait a little for it to be added to the repo's.
The problem started for me when apt tried to upgrade nvidia-kernel-2.6-k7. Is it a bug in the kernel package or the mkinitramfs (which was also upgraded yesterday)? Is there a way to select an alternate initrd method?
I found a work-around for this problem. I installed yaird as was suggested but this didn't work when upgrading the kernel because the mkinitramfs-kpkg attempts to make the initrd, yaird sees the initrd in /boot and stops with the message that the initrd already exists. What I did was to 'chmod -x /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs-kpkg' making it unexecutable. I did the aptitude upgrade again and the kernel installed correctly.
Now my problem is that the nvidia drive won't load. In the immortal words of Roseanne Roseannadana, it's always something.
