Increasing Gain of Sound Output

Hello,

I am using Red Hat Linux Enterprise Edition 4
I am having Intel Onboard Soundcard
Motherboard is Intel 915GLVG.

Can anybody please tell me how to increase the sound level?
The volume control is at its peak value and even the sound of XMMS player.

Because the sound output when I play the mp3 files in Windows XP is far more than what I get in Linux.

are you using alsa? if yes, then it's possible that alsa has mismapped your sound out to the headphone module - open your alsamixer and play with the headphone control to see if this is the case.

there is another thread or two that give a fix for this issue (you have to edit alsaconf). the fix didn't work for me since the line(s) i'm supposed to edit don't exist in my alsaconf; so, i'm just stuck with using the headphone volume control as my master, for now.

if i can dig up those other threads, i'll edit this post to point you in the right direction....

which isn't the one i was reading a couple of days ago - however, it does give the fix, which is an edit in /etc/modprobe.conf

i've just tried it myself, and it works. the 'headphone' module is removed from alsamixer, but the master and pcm modules take care of headphone volume when necessary.

just so you don't need to jump to the other forum to view the fix, it is thus:

add this line to /etc/modprobe.conf

options snd_intel8x0 ac97_quirk=hp_only

Can anybody tell me why sound quality is so bad even in ALSA
driver?
I heard the same file in Windows XP, its quality is amazing.
Why my driver / hardware is not delivering that quality?

Is there any fine tuning essential??
