ATI Radeon x800xl driver install

I'm trying to play Eternal Lands on Fedora 2.

EL always runs REALLY slow, and through research, I believe it is due to an old ATI driver. So I downloaded the new driver, and tried to follow the instructions via ATI.

They say to do this:

To install the ATI Proprietary Linux driver using the Automatic option, follow these steps:

1. Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the ATI Proprietary Linux driver download.
2. Enter the command sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-i386.run to launch the 32bit version of the ATI Proprietary Linux driver installer or sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-x86_64.run to launch the 64 bit version of the ATI Proprietary Linux driver installer. The ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Setup dialog box is displayed.

I'm trying the i386, and it keeps giving me this message

Obviously it doesn't like something about my X Server, any ideas?

Are logged in as root when you try to install the driver? if not try loggin in as root

The ati(and nvidia) supplied proprietary drivers have some known issues with installation and dependencies.

Try the repackaged drivers supplied by the rpm.livna.org.

Hmm, that links claims to be the place I need to be. But I can't find any links to the drivers. Is there something I'm missing?

Also, I have an nVidia GeForce 5200 out of an older computer. Would it be easier to install that? Or are all video cards a pain in the butt??

I always use the rpm packages that ati provides and I never had such a problem. Just find out if you are using XFree86 or X.org and pick the appropriate rpm from the ati website.

the drivers that they supply only work on a few versions of xf86 and xorg only 6.8.2. according to the ati installer release notes if you have upgraded certain 3d components the driver might no install.... this sounds like the likely cause.

Imo the graphics adapter is not supported yet - have a look at the release notes, they only mention up to 850xt.

I have the same card but I can install the driver but starting the xserver fails with some error messages about unrecognised chip.
