Question Greek in KDE

Hi there!

There are two problems that I face with the greek charset on kde.

First is that I cannot stress (tonoi) words in kde Applications such as KOffice and other editors, (on web browsers works fine)

Second, that all greek names used in desktop links are dislayed as ´?´ characters...

Everything else in greek KDE works just fine..

Anybody having had the same problem?

thanks.

(´stww )

You must set the LC_CTYPE env. variable to el_GR, or el_gr.UTF-8. Run:
Code:
locale
to find out what locale you're using and if LC_CTYPE is not one of the above run:
Code:
export LC_CTYPE=el_GR
or
export LC_CTYPE=el_GR.UTF-8
Of course you must put the above command in your .profile or similar files to be able to use it any time you log-in.
About KDE I dunno since I don't use it. Perhaps you don't use greek fons. You can take a lookhere for details about greek in Linux.

This link you provided seems great.
I'm running Suse 10.1.beta.9 with KDE.
I will follow the steps and see.
Back here if stuck
Thanks a lot

Hi again,

Below I show what seems to be installed in my SUSE.10.1
However, the only font active for Greek is the Arial.
E.g. for example in Kword when I click the different
fonts (in english mode) they work and change, yet,
nothing changes while in greek mode.

Any insight please?

Hi Panos,
Quote:
LANG=POSIX
You must change this also to:
Code:
LANG=el_GR.UTF-8
As for KDE, there should be a tool in Control Center to let you add new fonts. Also if you added any greek fonts you have to add the path to them in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf, or better yet in /etc/fonts/local.conf (if this doesn't exist you can create it by copying the part of fonts.conf related to the various font directories).

Regards

ibex@linux-mkwn:~> locale
LANG=en_GB.UTF-8

So it's ok with this now. Thank you.
Let me ask one more - a quick one:

I put the command export LC_CTYPE=el_GR.UTF-8 in
my ~/.profile but it does not work for the Kword.
Yet, when I run it in the console (as root or usr) Kword works.
Where should this thing go to affect all programs and all sessions?

I tried at /etc/skel/.profile or /etc/skel/.bashrc and doe not make
any difference.
Thank you kai
Kalo Pasha :-)

I am sorry I was not clear enough above,
when I say "works" I mean that I can type
greek accents (τόνους) in Kword.

You can create (or edit if already exists) the file /etc/profile.local accordingly for system-wide, or ~/.profile for a specific user. Changes will take effect next time you log-in, or if you run:
Code:
source .profile

I did add this line:

export LC_CTYPE=el_GR.UTF-8

to my ~/.profile but it seems it is not executed when I log-in or even reboot.
When I run it manualy on the console it does the trick to allow me use greek accents.

Does this file need to be executable?
Let's try!

No, it seems the permissions do no matter.
Can it be due to a conflict/violation with
some other (e.g. type of keyboard) settings?
I am very new to Linux to understand what
is happening!
Would you give me one more try?

Add the 2 lines:
Code:
export LANG=el_GR.UTF-8
export LC_CTYPE=el_GR.UTF-8
in your ~/.profile, logout and login again. Run
Code:
locale
to see if you have the correct settings.
If you do, then perhaps you have to setup the correct language settings using KDE control panel.
You can also use yast to change the language.

Now it worked!
I am gratefull dear friend :-)
I was concerned about the keyboard functions
but these follow the language (Alt-Shift).

Not sure whether I want to change the language
at CONTROL PANEL or via YAST, because this
make the whole KDE interface to appear in Greek.
