for KDE desktop use Alt+F2 to get a run box.
Alt+F1 will bring up the K Menu.

so then you'd use <Alt>+F2 and then type: konsole
to start a console.

Or you can toggle between graphical terminal and text-terminal like so:
<Ctrl><Alt><F7> (back to) graphical Xterminal
<Ctrl><Alt><F1> open tty1

This may work with KDE, but not with all windows manager (this does not work with IceWM for example)

Ctrl Alt F1 should switch to a text mode screen and shell
Does it help?
