Ubuntu 17.04 boot loop

I've just installed Ubuntu 17.04 and am stuck in a login loop but can login through ctrl+alt+f1 OK. Most people seem to be blaming a bad Xauthority but I tried deleting mine and it made no difference. I swear I have this problem every time I install Ubuntu on my machine (can't remember how I fixed it last time), I wish they'd come up with a more permanent fix for it.
Would any kindly souls be able to suggest anything else I could try?

This seems to be due to the graphics drivers installed with the restricted extras. Installing again without ticking that box resolved the issue.

Thanks for letting us know how you fixed it, Mark.

Better bookmark this page for 18.04.

Can you please teach us how to do that? I am new to Ubuntu, stuck in either login loop or boot loop. I managed to get to terminal by Ctrl alt f3 or f1. Now I don't know what to do. Can you please provide commands on how to do this?

Hi, pretty sure I just installed the restricted extras without the graphics drivers. Not sure if you've got the same issue I had but if you installed proprietary drivers and want to rule them out try:
Code:
sudo apt --purge remove nvidia*
