Ubuntu 16.04 boots into restricted guest session

as from a couple of days ago my laptop (Dell Latitude D630) will boot only into a restricted (and temporary) guest session.
I have no option to log onto my actual user account.
I have very limited permissions, and cannot see any of my 'actual' user account area (so can't rescue any of my files - though most were backed up)
I cannot even see any files under /etc, /home, etc.. My guest home directory is now "/tmp/guest-wzrtia" (and I don't have write permission there either!).
This situation is the same as I had when I did my initial install a few months ago, selecting 'dummy run', prior to doing the permanent install.
How could this have happened? Where to go from here?
Any suggestions would be welcome.

*** OK - I've been able to switch into my 'proper' account, kill the guest session, and when I rebooted this time it came up properly! No idea what the problem was. Closing the call.

I'm not sure how you got to the point you were at but, the guest session is extremely limited on Ubuntu as explained at the link below to the Ubuntu documentation and everything you describe while in the guest session is expected behavior. Doing an online search for "Ubuntu guest user/session" will get a lot of hits if you ever run into this problems again.
