Getting update alert for i686 packages on Fedora 24 x86_64
Hello All,
Every now and then I get "new updates" alert, but when I select "Show updates" Yum extender (DNF) opens and shows nothing.
If I then run "sudo dnf update" from a terminal, I get a list of i686 packages to update, which I have been aborting.
Now, as far as I know, there shouldn't be any i686 packages installed, but given the update alerts, I have to assume there are some.
Is there a way of listing any i686 packages installed, and a way of then deleting them?
Thanks, I ran that and there are 193, and the surprising thing is many (most) are from @@commandline...a complete mystery...I don't recall ever installing them but like domestic blindness it is hard to fathom!
Is there a smart way of deleting them, or am I likely to cause problems?
I should add that I don't run wine, and typically run a 'standard' workstation system other than rpmbuild tools and quite a few x86_64 libs to locally build x86_64 packages like Hugin, Darktable for example.
I'd spend time with dnf history to try to figure where all the i686 packages came from. Leftovers from a failed update, etc. I just did a fresh fedora 24 xfce install on a new system and there are no i686 packages installed.
Going through that many packages individually would take a long time. If you can't figure out how the packages got there, and you're sure that they shouldn't be installed, perhaps back up all you data then clean the disk and do a fresh installation. Installing f24 from a usb stick to unpartitioned disk space on a new machine took less than an hour start to finish.

I've had a good look through the history and it really doesn't throw up any clues as to how this has all come about.
I've also checked quite a few of the i686 entries and found that the identical x86_64 are installed. I see no known packages in the i686 list that I know or use, most are libs.
My F24 was via an dnf-upgrade from F23, so not sure whether that has played some part in this mystery.
I'm reluctant to start again with a clean install, as setting up my package building environment/libs etc from scratch can be quite a time consuming business.
I'm leaning towards simply blowing away all the i686 packages. If all are also installed as x86_64 removing this lot should be safe...shouldn't it?
Here's the list;

I assume it would be safe to delete the i686 versions, but having good backups means it would only be an annoyance, not a disaster, if you accidentally nuked the system.
Well, I backed up all the important stuff, entered the "sudo dnf remove...", and hung on tight.
It all went smoothly, and a reboot after shows all is well.
Thanks for your help.
