Ubuntu 14.04 LTS - Need high-powered Dictionary/Spellchecker Installed - Newbie

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and I find that the default spellchecker is inadequate for use in emails, forums, etc. The present spellchecker is not American English, and it drives me to distraction with its constant disagreement with me on spelling compound words, hyphenated words, etc.—and the lexicon is way too small.

Is there a way to install a sophisticated dictionary/spellchecker and how to replace the present one? Where might I find such a piece of software? Please keep in mind that I am not as knowledgeable as most computer users, and I need easy-to-follow instructions. I'm sorry about my lack of savvy in this regard.
