help please: unable to install Ubuntu-Gnome 14.04.2 desktop

Hello forum members.

Please can anyone give a hint or two at what I am doing wrong?

I am trying to install from ubuntu-gnome-14.04.2-desktop-i386.iso.

The checksum is ok, the disks are DVD R, the system is i386:

Whenever I burn the image to disk and try booting, the dvd drive attempts to do something or other, then the boot via dvd fails.

No matter what I do: change burning programs, burn the image, burn the contents of the image etc.... the image is unbootable.

I have never had any problems with installing the other versions of Ubuntu.

Here's hoping I have done something really stupid, and someone can point it out.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Do an md5checksum on the iso file after download to verify it using the hash on the download site. Burn the iso "as an image". What software are you using to burn the image to a DVD?

Thanks for that swift reply yancek.

Yes, I verified the iso md5checksum hash on the download site, and it was correct, I first burnt the image (not the contents), then, as a last resort, I tried burning the contents. I used "CD/DVD creator" that comes with Ubuntu Lucid (I have had no problems with using it to burn other releases) I also used "Brasero", with the same result.

The interesting thing is that if I open any other disk which contains a burnt iso image, all the folders etc are visible, but in the case of the iso in question all I see is the same image that I downloaded.

It is a most annoying problem.

regards

Brasero has an option "Burn as Image" which you need to select. If the burn is correctly done, you should see several folders/files when you mount it rather than just the iso file. If you've done that and it still fails, I don't have any other suggestion.

In the end I installed a disk program called K3B, and all went perfectly well. How on earth the other two programs failed to burn that image, when they were able to burn many others, is beyond me.

I'm not sure why the other programs didn't work to burn the DVD as you didn't indicate what they were. k3b is excellent software for this purpose and has been around for many years. I've personally used it exclusively since I started using Linux and rarely have any problem with it. Glad you got it working.
