In Firefox 33.0.2 on Slackware --Current with the Startpage as the default search, I am able to bookmark pages by going to "Menu--Bookmarks-->Bookmark This Page." The Menu Bar needs to be enabled.
As an aside, I find the new little tablet style menu in the upper left corner which is slowly infecting applications to be--er--less than desirable. The one in Firefox is disorganized and confusing.

sometimes some of the databases in ~/.mozilla/firefox/nnnnnnn.default/ get corrupted.
there was a simple trick to fix that, which i don't remember right now. a search at http://forums.mozillazine.org/ should provide answers.

I'm running version 33 and automatically update whenever a new version is available, now I'm starting to wonder if FF is what I think it is!
well mozilla did change the gui a few versions back
tabs on TOP ( yuck) for one thing
the nav bar at the top in hidden ( you have to turn it back on )
you REALLY DO want to install the add on called "Classic Theme Restorer"
