I installed xubuntu 12.04 over a year ago and managed quite easily to get the wireless card running on this old laptop Dell Inspiron 6000.
All it took if i remember well was to install fwcutter and some other stuff and it was very simple. I had found the information with the help of google and it is still running as a matter of fact.
So here i go and now i installed Debian Wheezy on another partition and the only problem as stated above is the wireless card BCM4318 airforce one 54 g.
The wired (cable)connection works fine but the wireless got me beat.
I installed b43fwcutter and i do not know if i have to install something else, seeing that the network manager comes up all the time asking me for the network's password and it greys out as soon as i start to type the password.
I searched so much on the web that i am getting wheezy here, just wondering if some of you experts could help me with this , thank you
The kernel is the one that came with the install= 3.2.04
Have you installed the firmware-brcm80211 package?
Quote:
Description: Binary firmware for Broadcom 802.11 wireless cards
This package contains the binary firmware for wireless network cards with the Broadcom BCM4313,
BCM43224, BCM43225, BCM43241, BCM4329, BCM4330, BCM4334 or BCM4335 chips, supported by the brcmsmac
or brcmfmac driver.
Thanks for the quick responses ; frankbell= i had already done what is suggested on the debian wiki for the 4318 chip.
jdkaye ;according to synaptic and the debian wiki link above,firmware-brcm80211 is for other broadcom43 chips.
debian wiki suggests firmware-b43-installer for the 4318 card which the b43fwcutter package installed in synaptic.
I checked on my xubuntu 12.04 and both firmware-b43-installer and b43fwcutter are installed. No firmware-brcm80211 installed.
A little bit stumped here , If i install firmware-brcm80211 on debian , will it conflict with what i installed previously? thanks again..oh yes , i reinstalled both the gnome network-manager and the b43fwcutter package but to no avail. Network- manager comes up and as soon as i start typing my network's password , it greys out.
If the card is still not working and you have both both firmware-b43-installer and b43fwcutter installed then you have nothing to lose by installing firmware-bcrm80211 package. You can always uninstall any or all of those packages if need be.
An alternative approach would be to buy and plug in a wifi dongle (that's what I use). There are loads (I can suggest one) that work with no problems. So if you're fed up ...

I already installed the brcm firmware , rebooted , no change , so i uninstalled it and i will make a few more experiments and yes i would like you to give the name of the gizmo you got working also.
I bought this because my wifi provider (BT) used a system that supports 802.11n which supports a much faster dl/ul rate.

I bought it from Amazon. It was recommended to me by someone else (an Australian, if memory serves) on LQ. It works very well indeed. It cost about £6 but it's probably even cheaper now.

Some time this week i'll have a look around here at staples or online , top of the day to you JDK. The wife is going to cuba for all of next week so i might have the time to even have a look at the ndiswrapper thing or whatever.
What happened was a while back I had to change the password in a hurry on my network , I usually put this down in a file , but I omitted the 2 last digits of the password ........so sorry guys...everything works fine now...
