APT is a powerful tool, and is worth learning if you are going to use it. (For a GUI alternative, did you know that KPackage can handle .deb's (APT), as well as .rpm's?)
Assuming that your /etc/apt/sources.list, or equivalent in FC, is already set up & has an appropriate Fedora repository listed, it's as simple as:
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install ipw2200
As a Debian person, let me encourage you consider moving to Debian, the originator of APT, or one of it's many (ugh, bad pun coming) progeny. SimplyMEPIS or [Ku|U]buntu.
Thanks a million. As you can tell, I am really a newbie here.
Reason for fedora is that it is the only distro I've tried that works on myu laptop properly... tried Suze, Debian, Ubunto, Kubunto, Mandriva, Slax, yoper, and more.
Kubunto works good, and is an easy instrall, but the kde setup for wlan is bugged and to irritating to try an configure. FC 4 works good, only that the hardware detection for my lan products is problematic. Therefore an update for the ipw2200 tools is the best answer to my problems, since I like fedoras stability.
Hope I get the update to work....
If you have time, please link to an rpm install guide as well.
Unfortunately for you, I switched from RH to Debian & then Debian based distros just before it became necessary to learn rpm. Now that I have APT, I have little interest in knowing how to use RPM.
It's bad luck that sometimes hardware support forces our choice of distro. If you are interested in pursuing the possibility of using a Debian based distro, then I would suggest 1st trying Knoppix to see if it can find & support your hardware. If so, then consider SimplyMEPIS or trying Ubuntu/Kubuntu again. Especially check out the forum areas on the site of the one you are working with. I have a very good Kubuntu person in my Wednesday Linux Workshop (think weekly install fest) here in Houston who doesn't come here (LQ) but is active on http://ubuntuforums.org/. Similarly you can also go to http://mepis.org
and http://mepislovers.org.
BTW, I believe both recently brought out new versions: SimplyMEPIS 3.3.1-1 & Ubuntu 5.04. Your laptop may be better supported now.
