Mounting USB Hard Drive in SuSE 9.1

Here is my delima! I have a 160GB IDE Hard Drive, in a USB storage case. The drive works fine in Windows XP. But this has nothing to do with that. SuSE appears to detect the drive ok, but when I try and access the contents, I get the following error:

folder /media/usb-storage-oddProlificTechnologyInc-MassStorageDevice:0:0:0p1

These are the steps that I performed:
1. Create a spot for it in /mnt. ie: /mnt/usbdrive The name isn't really important, just make sure you can tell what it is.
2. su to root and "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbdrive".

And then I added this into /etc/fstab
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbdrive auto rw,users 0 0

The drive shows up on my desktop as this:
Hard Disk (sdb1) [/media/usb-storage-oddProlificTechnologyInc-MassStorageDevice:0:00:0p1]

Any Ideas as??? I need to access this drive!

Try simply going into the mount point directory after mounting in a terminal and do an ls.
This sounds like a bug with KDE.

SuSE 9.1 uses submount per default. That means that the mountpoint is created by the system (it's this: /media/usb-storage-oddProlificTechnologyInc-MassStorageDevice:0:00:0p1). Sometimes submount has trouble with it's own creations, so I would recommend to refrain from using submount, using this instruction:

Awesome! Thanks very much guys this helps a lot! Now I can not only mount the drive, but also get rid of that annoying drive that shows up on my desktop that I can never access. Now all I need t do is somehow enable write access to the drive. Its NTFS, but I've been told that if I can convert it to FAT then I should be fine.

You may use the Yast Partitioner. If the HDD is properly recognized, it should appear in the list of available drives. You may then select the respective partition (not the drive) and press 'Edit'. In the following dialog you can select 'Format' and 'FAT' as filesystem. You may or may not choose a mountpoint (this will be created by Yast, as well as an entry in fstab, so if did that already, you better leave this empty).

You could also use mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdxy from console. I am not sure if you need to delete and re-create the partition with fdisk (or cfdisk) first. Shouldn't be necessary.
