DISCUSSION: Burning ISO's in Linux/K3B

This thread is to discuss the article titled: Burning ISO's in Linux/K3B

Although K3B starts, loads and processes the .iso file, it shows no CD burners available (two are identified in Mandrake Control Centre, and both burners have worked under windows ).

No Start button is therefore available.

Grateful for any clues here - trying to ditch windows...

hmmm... all I have to do is double click the ISO file and it launches K3B. After that, I set the burn speed (default is 52X to match the drive's max burn speed, most of my available blank disks are 32X or 40X) and click start. Of course I wait for it to check the MD5, but once I click start, I wait a few minutes depending on how large the ISO is, it ejects, I label the disk. Do I make this sound too easy? Or is it actually easier to open K3B>button here>menu there>locate file>then start where I started? Maybe it's just a Slacker thing though.

It turns out to be a permissions thing. I got around it by running K3B from a su terminal.

Must work out how to set them from a GUI..

I had searched around, trying to locate the burner, and wasted time trying to mount a DVD burner in "My Computer". I still didn't know what K3B was, there is no icon, but I typed it into the "run command" box, and it all ran smooth as silk.

Should be on OpenBSD soon

Come on why K3B ? just download iso image and open shell become root and type cdrecord dev=/dev/your_cd_or_dvdrom /path/to/file.iso and that's it!

Kalimero, you've obviously been at this awhile. Not because you can whip out a command line, but because you forget how intimidating the command line is to newbies. A lot of folks (and hopefully a lot more) are migrating over from Windoze and to be allowed control over their environment is still way too new. I have a small class of ex-super users from Windoze and they are constantly blown away by the control allowed to a user. Last week our after class session I showed them Google Earth. It blew their mind that I could open the terminal and just type googleearth and it popped up in full graphics. Most people coming from Windoze take awhile to warm up to the terminal mode.

Microsoft is caught in the middle. With OSX now available on PC they are faced with trying to match the graphics of Mac and the "we'll take care of you" attitude of Apple. On the other side they have Linux lining up to eat their lunch on the server and somewhat on the desktop (see SLED10).

I am a beta tester for Vista and it is lade with eye candy; non-essential for sure but lots of it. Even WITH upgraded 2GiG of Ram and the newest graphics cards Aero graphics is a waste. There is so much they could have done but didn't. But I suppose when it gets to be two years late, they had to stop somewhere.

I don't seem to have any issues burning CDs, only DVDs.

That's using OpenSuse 10.2 released version - I need to update my profile!

My question is about speed..Does that make a big difference when downloading a bit torrent and then burning the iso from the torrent ? I've been trying for some time to get a distro and been burning at 12x, but I can't get passs the error message about the system disk and rebooting. A friend mention the burning speed does make a difference...
