I am writing just to thank bufo333 for his strategy regarding the crash on power source change.
In fact, not only the power source can now be changed without any crash as well as no more crashes occur when I press my laptop's function keys (hibernate, brightness up/down, etc.): everytime I pressed these keys the system crashed, very likely because they also make use of apm calls. And, of course, the bootsplash screen functions quite ok now. This was a major problem for me that was solved following this strategy. Crashes caused me data loss, due to reiserfs "bad" journaling (there were some files I was able to undelete through reiserfsck --rebuild-tree but others were simply lost). I own a Asus B1 laptop running Linux Mandrake 10.0.
Thank you.
