Network Appliance. ARM vs x86

1. Not taking into account the software availability what would be cost and performance effective. ARM or x86?

2. Taking into account the software availability what ISA would you choose? ARM or x86?

3.For ARM: what software do you know for network appliance(preferably that has enterprise features)?

4.For x86 what software do you know for network appliance(preferably that has enterprise features)?

EDIT: I apology if I wasn't clear in my thread. I'm interested in a network appliance like router/firewall/proxy/VPN solution.
Interests:
1./2. About hardware/ISA: What ISA is more cost and performance effective in network processing.
3./4. About software: the more features the better

Freenas, OpenIndiana and Openfiler are some of the top x86 but there are many more that are very good choices.
