Can't format usb thumb drive


Using "Disks" in Ubuntu 16.04 lts I get the following message:

This partition cannot be modified because it contains a partition table; please reinitialize layout of the whole device. (udisks-error-quark, 11)

did you try using gparted on it yet??

I tried gparted too. I decided to trash the thumb drive, it's only 8 megs and an off brand.

There is a command line that should wipe it out sort of safely. I think it is wipefs with some options. This assume you don't just use another tool or use disks to remove any references to other data. Should be fdisk on it still or I love gparted for it's ease.
