How to take a HD snapshot with your webcam

I have a HP HD Webcam. lsusb informs me it's the 0461:4dce Primax Electronics, Ltd (build-in webcam HP EliteBook 8460p).

If I use streamer, the jpg files have a resolution of 320x240 with the following command:

If I use v4lctl, it's always 640x480. It doesn't matter if I use full or 1280x720:

But with cheese, it captures in 1280x720. But I cannot use cheese for my photo timelapse project, because it cannot capture a photo using a single commandline command (cheese is a graphical utility).

I also tried it with ffmpeg, but there are so many options and I never got it to work (even followed a lot of guides on the internet).

I also tried with mplayer, but also didn't work:

When the computer is turned on, it should automatically start taking snapshots with the webcam. This will be done with crontab.
The computer will not be having any display. It must be able to start taking snapshots without user interference.
The only thing I need is, how can I capture a snapshot with full resolution using a single commandline command?

I had to take pictures at regular intervals from a webcam as well, and I used motion (a nice program). It can take snapshots (jpg or ppm) or movies from a video input when motion is detected, and it can be configured to take pictures at the intervals you want. The interface is command line, with lots of options, but it wasn't difficult to set it up (the configuration file has many helpful comments).

Hopefully it will support the native resolution of your camera (the one I used was 640x480 and it worked). A daemon mode is available, so all you have to do is to edit motion.conf, setting the interval you want and modifying a few other options, with no need to add entries to crontab.

I edited the following options:

daemon_mode on

A mini-http server will be running by default, listening to port 8081 (or one of your choice) and allowing you to monitor the webcam through the network with a web browser. You can disable the server by setting the port to 0:
