Lightbulb Dimming the screen

Hello,

I have a Pavilion g7 with

$ uname -a
Linux home02 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.46-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux

It's fully updated.

I've never been able to get the screen to dim.

I've tried the following,
http://askubuntu.com/questions/12360...u-12-04-beta-2
but all it did was remove the slider control from the Brightness and Lock screen.

Thanks for all the help!

Code:
harry@biker ~ $ apt-cache policy redshift
redshift:
  Installed: 1.7-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.7-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1.7-2ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/universe amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
http://antix.freeforums.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4479

That is what I did to get around trying to manually getting the hotkeys to work to dim the screen.
I have a little red bulb in my taskbars/slits that I can toggle redshift on and off with.
It is pretty nice once you get it setup. I never heard about redshift till the other forum member
mentioned it and then I was lassoed into showing how to get it to work in our Window Managers and
I also have it running in Mate Desktop in Mint. I do not use Gnome 3 or Gnome Panels or Ubuntu 12.04 though so
you are on your own on that.
