service httpd start [FAILED]

Completely stuck here, searched and searched, tried and tried, nothing is working.

The webserver has been working fine for months, I decided to install owncloud which also worked fine. Then I wanted to enable ssl, which I haven't quite got working yet but while trying to get it working something happened and I cannot start the webserver.

The only message in the error_log is:
[Sun Jul 07 14:58:31 2013] [notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper: /usr/sbin/suexec)
[Sun Jul 07 14:58:31 2013] [notice] SSL FIPS mode disabled

$ lsof -i :80
nothing

/var/run/httpd.pid does not exist.

$ service httpd status
httpd is stopped

$ service httpd configtest
Syntax OK

$ service httpd start
Starting httpd: [FAILED]

I'm running CentOS 5.9 with:
$ httpd -v
Server version: Apache/2.2.3
Server built: Jun 26 2013 10:33:42
$ php -v
PHP 5.4.17 (cli) (built: Jul 3 2013 16:30:18)
Copyright (c) 1997-2013 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v2.4.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2013 Zend Technologies

I just have no clue what the problem is or what to look at to find the issue. I even forced myself to update all my server packages and reboot the server after 315 days of uptime, it was sad to reboot but I figured that would correct the problem obviously not.

Thanks
