Discussion thread for the hardware diagnosis sticky

To keep the "Hardware diagnosis and common symptoms of hardware failure" thread clean I have created this thread for discussion, suggestions and questions. If you have any of those feel free to post here.

Overall it turned out quite well. I hope it will at least provide some info to people with hardware issues. Hardware issues are much more difficult to diagnose than I made it seem here. The only sure way is to have spares and test them out, but at least some software gives you some clue as to what the problem may be.

Some links are missing in the Solutions - HDD section, but it's not too important because they are linked earlier in the article.

Thanks, I somehow missed those links. I corrected that and also added a link to the ddrescue homepage.
With help of onebuck we also changed parts of the PSU Diagnosis, maybe you want to add them to your article at SDP.

I have updated the original article with some corrections and added high-pitched capacitor squealing/screeching as a good predictor of hardware failure and is very useful in locating the device that is failing.

I have a need to buy a new webcam. The one I am looking at is: N Logitech C920 HD Pro Webcam Widescreen1080p Video Calling and Recording PC. I need to know if this unit is 100% compatable with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 32 & 64 bit operating system. I am using an HP Pavilion desktop & Laptop.

Although, to my knowledge, there is no official Ubuntu support, it seems to work well for this person. However, I can't guarantee you will have the same experience.

I read the article superficially and stumbled over a detail:

Do NOT pry it [the CMOS battery] off using a screwdriver because it may break and it won't go back in.

IMO a screwdriver is an improperly tool. I'd suggest using something made out of a non-conductive material. Some plastic or wooden thing.

IMHO it is also tremendously helpful to request that the original poster of a thread provide as much of the supporting information such as log file entries and dmesg errors. I say this because as Aa newbie years ago I signed up here on lq and made the mistake of not including as much supporting information regarding the first problems that I encountered now mind you right outta the gate I dove headfirst into configuring a samba file server which is an extremely rarer thing for a Windows transplant to even attempt to do.
