Getting the internet to work on backtrack 5

First post

I know it's been asked before and is fairly well documented but I have tried many online solutions and none seem to work. Its backtrack 5 R1,GNOME 64 iso.

/etc/init.d/networking start: gives me networking stop/waiting.

ifconfig: gives me eth0 and an address,17 trx errors,inet6 addr etc(can't seem to put snapshots up here). It also gives lo with typical info, 127.0.0.1, subnet mask 255.0.0.0.

/etc/init.d/wicd start: gives me Starting Networkin connection manager wicd.

wicd network manager: Finds no wireless networks.(My wireless interface default is wlan0.)

dhclient:listening on,sending on,sending on,DHCP discover on eth0 on 255.255.255.255 on port 67 on interval 6,then says no DHCP offers recieved. No working leases in persistant databases, sleeping..

The net is hinting that the next option would be to assign a static address to my linux machine. Now I'm just wondering how i actually save the file i accessed using sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces after editing it to assign a static ip.

I'm not sure how to proceed, thinking of reinstalling with a different version of backtrack??

Any ideas???

TIA

Backtrack 5R1 is ancient, the newest version of Backtrack is 5R3 and even that is not supported anymore. Ditch Backtrack, install Kali Linux, the successor of Backtrack.

And PLEASE READ the developer post about Kali
" Should I Use Kali Linux?"
http://docs.kali.org/introduction/sh...use-kali-linux
and in particular !!!
" Is Kali Linux Right For You?"
-- to quote the developers !
Quote:
As the distribution developers, one would likely expect us to recommend that everyone use Kali Linux. The fact of the matter is however, that Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testing and security auditing and as such, it is NOT a recommended distribution for those unfamiliar with Linux.

In addition, misuse of security tools within your network, particularly without permission, may cause irreparable damage and result in significant consequences.

If you are looking for a Linux distribution to learn the basics of Linux and need a good starting point, Kali Linux is not the ideal distribution for you. You may want to begin with Ubuntu or Debian instead.
