Pop-up ads on hyperlinks will soon cause me to abandon LQ
I'd like to give a heads-up to the site owners that what seems to be a fairly recent development in the programming of the site will soon cause me to abandon any participation in LQ permanently: the pop-up ads which appear when I right-click on, say, the Programming topic links.
What currently happens is that my browsing experience stopscold while the site tries to dredge-up from somewhere a little advertisement pop-up that's trying to sell me a computer. Or something.
As it happens, I browse the site without logging-in until and unless I see something that interests me. I use the site, as I use all sites on the Internet, with aggressive ad-blocking.
If I can't use this site to quickly, and without interruption get to what I want and to do what I want ... then, yes, after thousands of posts and many years, I'm gone, for good.
Stop the pop-ups and the delays associated with retrieving them. Your quests for advertising revenue are not my concern as your "customer."
I'm not seeing any popup ads using Firefox 29.x with Adblock Plus and NoScript, but maybe I didn't follow your instructions to reproduce properly. I tried right-clicking forum links (in the Programming section) and links in posts, but no ads.
I would say Adblock and Noscript are required to surf the web without being abused by the ad companies. However, I think jeremy may be able to do something about the more intrusive ones ...
I have "Ad block plus" disabled on LQ and NEVER see a pop-up
Now i do have "No-script" and "Ghostery" installed
But "No-script" is allowing ALL on this site
that leaves the ONE tracker that Ghostery is blocking
even loged out with Ghostery disabled and no-script disabled
all i see are two ad's on the right side
one is from amazon

sundialsvcs,
Thanks for the feedback. You will never see those on LQ if you are logged in. The reality of running a site the size of LQ necessitates that we have some revenue stream, however. We made a decision early on to show members as few ads as possible (and over the years we've steadily decreased the number of ads we show members). I've always felt that participation was far more important than revenue. There are a huge number of site visitors who simply find LQ via a search, look for an answer and then leave. Those are the visitors we've chosen to show ads to. I'd recommend that you either stay logged into the site, or install AdBlock or Ghostery (which will obviously impact your browsing experience beyond LQ).
Like jefro, I use a host file (the same one, in fact). I do not run any other adblock software or plugins. I have not noticed a pop-up of any sort when I've been logged into LQ.
But the OP does not log in, unless he sees something he wants to reply to.
That is his choice, his behaviour and therefore something only he can influence.
I'm not about to psychoanalyse him but the fact he's not even attempting to use a polite tone of voice and suddenly starts making "threats" after ten years is completely devoid of respect in my eyes. Sure, we don't like to see members leave and sure sometimes ad choices have to be tweaked but still it requires some revenue to run this show. And remember one gets access to LQ for free! Most people here don't even know (or apparently care) what it takes and what Jeremy pays out of his own pocket for...

I've never had an add in LQ and up until recently (4-6 weeks) I only ran adblock plus and on some machines noscript. Now I run Ghostery as well but it requires a little "tweaking" to allow some sites to function.

I was not supporting the OP. In fact the reason I always log in is to avoid the large number of advertisements. I was simply pointing out that repeated references to not seeing ads while logged-in will not address the OP's concern. Unless those posts are intended to be hints to log in.
No, I didn't read it that way. (Would be nothing wrong with supporting the OP anyway.)
It was just a convenient hook for my response.

The OP does things his way, LQ does things its own way.
Sometimes there's change to be had, sometimes there isn't.
