@TroN-0074: that looks very helpful and I'm gonna try it. Thank you.
I also have to thank colorpurple21859 & yancek for their help so far.
Plan for near future: I'm going to really learn shell commands :-)

It looks like maybe grub is trying to install in efi mode. After
Code:
sudo chroot /mnt
do this:
Code:
sudo grub-install --target=i386-pc --boot-directory=/boot /dev/sda
sudo update-grub
Code:
exit && sudo umount /mnt/dev && sudo umount /mnt/dev/pts && sudo umount /mnt/proc && sudo umount /mnt/sys && sudo umount /mnt

I've taken TroN-0047 's advice and made a boot repair disk . Ran it and it worked, in that windows 7 booted again. Now I intend to re-install Mint this way. That last link also made clear why install went wrong the first time: I allowed the installer to do partitions etc. but you have to opt to do that yourself.
